Bone Modification

Have you been told that you are not a candidate for dental implants due to a lack of bone or a large sinus? Here at Stanley Hometown Dentistry LLC, we have the knowledge and skill to help you overcome this problem. When we plan for an implant, we may find that the bone needs to be modified to create a foundation for the implant. For example, after a tooth is extracted, bone height, width or volume can decrease. To make up for this loss, we have two treatments, bone manipulation and bone grafting, that may work for you.

Bone manipulation uses the existing bone to acquire the ideal bone quality in which to place the implant using a series of osteotomes, or special tools for shaping and preparing bone. This can be performed at the same time as the implant placement, reducing the number of surgeries required and preventing the need for bone grafting. However, sometimes this treatment is not possible and bone grafting is needed.

During a bone graft, we amplify bone that may be deficient in volume or quality to serve as a better foundation for an implant. We transplant a piece of bone from another area of your jaw or body to your jawbone, or we utilize artificial bone material or bone fragments from a tissue bank when needed. Your jawbone then grows together with the grafted bone tissue, creating a stronger, more stable foundation. We also perform sinus grafts that can increase bone height in the upper posterior jaw.
